Charleston Shooting an act of terrorism

In the Guardian article “Dylann Roof: friends and family describe drug use and racism” Roof is quoted as saying:  ” “‘You rape our women, and you’re taking over our country, and you have to go.'”  This sounds like terrorism to me– a public, performative act, meant to send a message to a population of people.  That population is black people of America.  Why aren’t the media calling this act out for what it is?  Why is the term “terrorist” reserved for only certain groups of people (i.e. read:  young Middle Eastern and/or Muslim men)?  White America boasts a very, very long history of terrorism against black persons and black communities beginning in 1619 when the first African Americans were forcibly brought to these shores.  Obviously, the terror for black folks isn’t over.  When we begin to examine the log in our own eye concerning our own terrorism against the “other” in our midst– or abroad for that matter– we will be able to understand the dynamics of anti-Western terrorism rather than simply to demonize it.
